Description: Alma Rubens: Alma was born in 1897 in San Francisco. A stage comedy was being put on and suddenly one of the chorus girls became sick. They needed an immediate replacement, and chose Alma. An actor advised Alma to leave the company and try her luck in the movies, as he was about to do. She took his advice eagerly. Her first role was in 1913. 1916 was Alma�s year: she made many films of high quality. Douglas Fairbanks catapulted her into the galaxy of stardom. Her roles began to decline in frequency with the advent of synchronized sound. We don�t forget her drug addiction; Alma had a heroin problem. Then there was her love life. She was very unstable. She suffered from a severe form of pneumonia, and died after being unconscious for three days; the illness began with something as innocuous as the common cold. Description: Virginia Woolf (1882-1941)was born in London in a family where literature was the only reason for living.Woolf's youth was shadowed by series of emotional shocks.Her half-brother, sexually abused her.Her mother died from a bout of influenza,when Virginia was in her early teens.Her dear father suffered a slow death from stomach cancer(died in 1904). She he had a prolonged mental breakdown.Woolf moved with her sister and two brothers to the house in Bloomsbury. Description: Carmel Myers (1899-1980)Though she is little remembered today,that silent screen star had a high-flying career in her heyday and was ranked among the screen's most glamorous and enticing vamps.She was born in San Francisco (she was the daughter of a rabbi.).The family moved to Los Angeles.In Hollywood she rose quickly up the ranks appearing with Rudolph Valentino .She appeared in her most prestigious film over at MGM.In the epic extravaganza Ben-Hur:A Tale of the Christ (1925),she portrayed Iras,the evil Egyptian seductress out to snare both Ramon Navarro and Francis X.Bushman.Outrageously adorned,she was a tremendous hit.Each film has tried to outdo the costumes she wore for "Ben-Hur." Description: The swimwear industry took off in the �20s.Knitwear companies expanded their market to include swimwear.With its beautiful beaches and warm waters,it�s unsurprising that the West Coast emerged at this time as a hotbed of swimsuit manufacturers with Catlina,Cole of California,and Jantzen all setting up shop there.The West Coast was not coincidentally the home of burgeoning Hollywood,and this proximity led to the early adoption and wide dissemination of new bathing suit styles in popular films and publicity photographs.The boyish figure favored in the 1920s affected the style of the bathings suits,which were shorter and very much mimicked men�s bathing trunks.As ever,when hemlines are raised and garments tightened,modesty becomes a priority for moralists.Below is a 1922 photo of Washington policeman Bill Norton measuring the distance between knee and suit at the Tidal Basin bathing beach after Col. Description: In the U.S, beauty contests of women in bathing costumes became popular from the 1880s. However, such contests were not regarded as respectable. Beauty contests became more respectable with the first modern "Miss America" contest held in 1921, though less respectable beauty contests continued to be held. In 1907, the swimmer Annette Kellerman from Australia visited the U.S. She was arrested for indecent exposure because her swimsuit showed arms, legs and the neck. She changed the suit to have long arms and legs and a collar, still keeping the close fit that revealed the shapes underneath. She marketed a line of bathing suits and her style of one-piece suits came to be known as "the Annette Kellerman." It was considered the most offensive style of swimsuit in the 1920s and became the focus of censorship efforts. After this, bathing wear started to shrink, first uncovering the arms and then the legs up to mid-thigh. Description: I did this just because I think Pam's Meadow Romance QP #1 is so very very gorgeous. I was trying out a new line drawing portrait technique and loved the way the picture came out. The journaling is my favorite quote (Shakespearean--Polonious in 'Hamlet') This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man. The font I used for my name is Chocolate Factory and for the journaling is Papyrus. Thanks Pam, for this pretty QP.

Description: I have a friend who needs some words of encouragement. The cluster from 'Along a Dusty Path' and the background 3 from 'Believe in Self' by Pam, just made the perfect card for this person. Word art is by Paulette. The 'real card' --the paper one has a punched, gold-leafed butterfly that is exactly the same size as Pam's layered over the one on the design. (Perfection!)
